Northern Circuit

Northern Circuit Route 9 Days

The Northern Circuit path is one of the greatest on Kilimanjaro, with nearly 360 degrees of breathtaking scenery, including the calm, seldom frequented northern slopes.

As the longest Kilimanjaro route, the Northern Circuit requires the greatest acclimatization time and has the highest summit success rate. Thus, the Northern Circuit route comes highly recommended.

The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, starting with a lengthy journey from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. The first two days are spent hiking through the jungle to Shira Ridge, followed by a traverse of the Shira Plateau. The path then proceeds north, clockwise around Moir Hut, Buffalo Camp, and School Hut before summiting from the east. The descent is performed by the Mweka path.

Note: that summit day on this way is more difficult than on other routes because of the longer distance.

How Long is the Northern Circuit Route?

The Northern Circuit course is around 88 kilometres, or 53 miles, long.

How Many Days Does the Northern Circuit Route Climbing Kilimanjaro Take?

Though there is a shorter 8-day version, the Northern Circuit route is normally completed in 9 days.

How Hard is it to Climb Kilimanjaro on the Northern Circuit Route?

The Northern Circuit route is deemed challenging owing to its up-and-down character. Climbers have a good chance of acclimatising to the altitude due to the length of time they spend on the mountain. However, there are also disadvantages to spending so much time on the hill. It can lead to overall weariness, sleep deprivation, digestive disorders, respiratory troubles, and other ailments. Furthermore, summit day is especially difficult since climbers must cover more distances than other routes.

Kilimanjaro lemosho route

Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 7 Days

Mount Kilimanjaro may be climbed using six recognized routes: Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, and Umbwe. All of the Marangu, Machame, and

Umbwe routes approach the summit from the south. The Lemosho and Shira roads arrive from the west. The Rongai path approaches from the north. Except for Marangu and Rongai, all routes go to Mweka.

The Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 7 Days is used to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
Because of its distant position, the path is less popular and provides hikers with a unique wilderness experience in which they may observe enormous fauna such as antelope, elephants, and buffalo. Because there is normally less precipitation on this side of the mountain, you are less likely to experience rain and will have clearer views of the top. While it is flatter, it does not provide the climb-high, sleep-low option; hence, it is advisable to plan extra days for acclimatization.

The Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 7-Day Trail is one of the more accessible ways up Kilimanjaro. Rongai is the sole way to approach Kilimanjaro from the north, and the descent follows the Marangu Route. Summit night from Kibo Hut is difficult and follows the same route as the Marangu route, which goes around Gilman’s Point before reaching Uhuru Peak. There are various versions; the one detailed here is a longer path that includes Mawenzi Tarn.

Duration: 5–6 days.
Level of difficulty: Medium
Very good scenery.
Traffic: Low.

Marangu Route

Kilimanjaro Marangu Route 5 Days

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO CLIMB THE MARANGU ROUTE?

The Marangu Route is favored by many because it is thought to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path

However, the short time frame and the gradual and steady ascent do not include a ‘walk high, sleep low’ profile, making altitude acclimatization difficult.

The Marangu Route is also less scenic than any of the other routes because the ascent and descent are along the same path, also making it the most crowded route.

There are no parts on the route that require any technical climbing skills.

Because many climbers try to climb the Marangu Route in only 5 days and fail because of poor acclimatization, it has the lowest summit success rate. Therefore our Marangu itinerary includes a minimum of 6 days.

The total Marangu Route distance is approximately 70 kilometers from gate to gate.

If you are concerned about climbing the Great Barranco Wall then this might be the route for you!

Machame Route

Kilimanjaro Machame Route 6 Days

The Machame route, also known as the “Whiskey” route, is a six or seven-day camping route and is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro. This trail offers stunning views, a reasonable challenge, and plenty of time to acclimate, making it a good choice for those who have a bit of extra time in their schedule.

According to statistics from Kilimanjaro National Park, approximately 35% of all climbers on the mountain use it.

The Machame route has been nicknamed the “Whiskey Route” because it is often perceived as being tougher than the Marangu route, which is often referred to as the “Coca-Cola” route. Unlike that trail however, camping is allowed on Machame, which means trekkers will be sleeping in tents all the way to the summit.

Trekkers who take the Machame Route pass several well-known Mount Kilimanjaro landmarks while en route, including the famed Lava Tower and Shira Plateau. The route wanders up and down a series of valleys and ridges, which make the walk a bit more strenuous, but reward hikers with some of the best views on the mountain.

It is for that reason that the Machame route is widely considered to be the most scenic of all of the routes up Mount Kilimanjaro, providing unique and varied landscapes to pass through on each and every day. The trail starts on the south side of the mountain, passes underneath the Southern Ice Field, and makes its summit approach from the Barafu Camp.

Machame Route

Kilimanjaro Machame Route 7 Days

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO CLIMB THE MACHAME ROUTE?

Approaching legendary Kilimanjaro from the south-west, the popular Machame Route, taken over six or seven days (we recommend seven) will give you good acclimatization time and every chance of reaching the summit.

The Machame Route is considered relatively tough. Depending on your level of fitness as you will be trekking for 6-7 hours nearly every day and at increasing altitude

For the summit ascent, you will need to be prepared for a whopping 12-15 hours on your feet! Climbing up the crater rim to Uhuru Peak for 6-8 hours, and descending back down for 6-7 hours.

Climbers are sometimes nervous about how they will handle the Great Barranco Wall, but this is just a short scramble, and you will be helped by your guide every step of the way.

That being said, there are no parts of the route that require any technical climbing skills.

Thousands of climbers safely travel this route each year, let alone the Kilimanjaro porters carrying heavy loads.

The total Machame Route distance is approximately 62 kilometers from gate to gate.
